PERIODONTICS
Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, also known as gum diseases, occurs when bacteria accumulate in the area between the teeth and gums. This excess of bacteria can lead to infection and eventual deterioration of the gum. If left untreated, it can also lead to loss of teeth.
The symptoms of gum disease do not usually emerge until the disease has reached its advanced stages. That is why regular checkups are so important in preventing this disease. At each visit we remove the hardened plaque that has built up along the gum line. If we see symptoms of the disease, we can immediately set you on a course of treatment.
Prevention and Treatment
If detected early enough, gum disease can be prevented or even reversed. If you have any concerns or have noticed any of the following symptoms, please contact our office for an examination:
- red, swollen gums
- persistent bad breath
- bleeding during brushing or flossing
- loose teeth
Periodontal services include:
Cleanings
Periodontal cleanings, also known as deep cleanings, are essential for maintaining gum health and preventing gum disease. This procedure involves removing plaque and tartar buildup from below the gumline, where regular brushing and flossing cannot reach. Periodontal cleanings can help reduce inflammation, gum bleeding, and bad breath, and can also help prevent tooth loss.
Gum Surgeries
Periodontal gum surgery is a treatment option for advanced gum disease. This procedure involves reshaping gum tissue and removing plaque and tartar from deep pockets. Gum grafting may also be necessary to restore lost gum tissue. Periodontal surgery can help improve gum health, prevent tooth loss, and restore a healthy smile.
Bone grafts
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that restores lost jawbone tissue. This procedure is often necessary before dental implant placement, as sufficient bone density is required for implant stability. Bone grafts can be sourced from the patient’s own body, a donor, or synthetic materials. This procedure allows individuals with significant bone loss to receive dental implants and regain a complete and functional smile.
Gingivectomy
A gingivectomy is a dental procedure that involves removing excess gum tissue. This can be beneficial for individuals with a “gummy smile” or those with excessive gum tissue that can harbor bacteria and contribute to gum disease. By reshaping the gumline, a gingivectomy can improve the appearance of the smile and promote better oral health.
Gum Grafts
Gum grafts are a surgical procedure designed to address gum recession, a condition where the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, exposing the roots. This procedure involves taking tissue from a donor site, often the roof of the mouth, and grafting it onto the receding gumline. Gum grafts help to prevent further recession, reduce tooth sensitivity, and improve the overall appearance of the smile.
